Martins Emeje is a distinguished Professor of Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy with distinction from ABU Zaria, a Master of Pharmacy and PhD from the University of Nigeria, where he also received the best PhD award, and was enlisted in UNN “Faces of Research Vi”. He had specialized post-doctoral training in molecular and cell biology and nanoscience at Tezpur University and National Chemical Laboratory respectively, in India. Emeje who is a graduate of project management from Walden University, USA, had earlier obtained a professional teaching qualification from ABU Zaria, where he equally graduated as the overall best graduating student with nine (9) prizes and an automatic scholarship. Prof. Emeje has about 150 publications including media mentions, patents, and trademarks.

He is an examiner to universities in Nigeria, Ghana and India. He was an adjunct lecturer at University of Uyo for nine (9) years, and currently a postgraduate supervisor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University; Federal University of Technology, Minna; and De Montfort University, UK. He is currently a visiting professor to Gregory University, where he is facilitating the establishment of a cGMP drug manufacturing facility. Prof. Emeje was the head of NIPRD’s spin-off during which the first indigenous phytomedicine was licensed to an indigenous pharmaceutical company.

Prof. Emeje is the principal recipient of a 5.88 billion Naira foreign grant for the establishment of the first nanomedicine centre in Nigeria. His work on phytomedicines has so far resulted in three major products listed by NAFDAC and available in the market. Also, his work in the application of nanotechnology in drug delivery won WHO/ANDI innovation award in 2011.

Prof. Emeje is one of the 8 finalists whose innovations for the advancement in health were selected by Emory University – facilitated consortium. Prof. Emeje is part of the international consortium of scientists from 23 countries who won a European grant on developing natural products for use in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Prof. Emeje who is a contributor in the book, Making Medicines in Africa: The Political Economy of Industrializing for Local Health, is a former National Chairman of Academic Pharmacists in Nigeria; the umbrella professional body for all pharmacists who teach and do research in Nigerian Universities and research institutes, as well as former president of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology Thrift and Credit Society.

Prof. Emeje is a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, and the current head of Research and Development, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Nigeria.
